Streaming Bandwidth Calculator
Estimate aggregate outbound bandwidth and hourly data for multiple simultaneous viewers.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with your own measurements, schedule, prices, or media settings.
- Keep each value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate and review every result together with the assumptions below.
Formula and method
Media bandwidth = viewers × bitrate per stream. Planned bandwidth adds the overhead percentage. Hourly GB = planned Mbit/s × 3,600 ÷ 8,000.
Calculations run in your browser. Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, preventing an old answer from being mistaken for the current calculation.
Worked example
Simultaneous viewers = 500; Bitrate per stream = 5 Mbit/s; Protocol and capacity overhead = 20 %. The calculator returns Media bandwidth = 2500 Mbit/s; Planned bandwidth = 3000 Mbit/s; Planned bandwidth = 3 Gbit/s; Hourly outbound data = 1350 GB.
The worked example uses the same default values shown in the interface, so the displayed result and explanation can be checked directly.
Limitations
Viewer concurrency, adaptive renditions, CDN architecture, geographic distribution, burst behavior and provider billing can materially change capacity requirements.
Use the result as a planning estimate. Confirm prices, policies, equipment ratings, units and professional requirements that apply to your situation.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the bandwidth required at every viewer?
No. It estimates aggregate origin or delivery capacity for the entered simultaneous viewers, before considering CDN offload or caching.
Why does the calculator reject my entry?
Each field shows its supported range. Whole-number fields reject decimals, and all fields reject blanks, words, comma-formatted numbers, fractions and non-finite values.
How should I round the result?
Keep extra digits while planning, then round to the precision supported by your inputs, package sizes, billing rules or equipment settings.
