Plan lawns, gardens, patios, fences, decks, and retaining walls with free calculators for material quantities, layout, bag counts, and project costs. Every tool explains its formula and assumptions.
Start with measurements, then choose a material calculator
Outdoor estimates are most reliable when the measured area matches the material’s coverage shape. Rectangular lawns and beds use length multiplied by width. Curved areas can be divided into smaller rectangles or measured with the closest practical geometric shapes. Sloped sites, thick bases, and uneven grades may need field adjustments beyond a flat-area calculation.
Planning tip: Keep the measured quantity separate from the purchase allowance. First calculate the physical area or volume, then add the project-specific extra for cuts, overlap, settling, breakage, touch-ups, or supplier packaging.
Lawn planning
For a bare-soil lawn, compare the Grass Seed Calculator with the Sod Calculator. Seed quantity depends on the rate for the exact species or blend, while sod quantity depends on roll or pallet coverage. For existing turf, the Lawn Fertilizer Calculator converts a product-label rate into application weight and shows the actual nitrogen supplied.
Garden soil, compost, and mulch
Raised Bed Soil, Compost, Topsoil, and Mulch all use area and depth, but they answer different purchase questions. Raised-bed fill may combine topsoil and compost; a compost topdressing can be much shallower; mulch is usually a surface layer. Enter the intended depth for that specific material instead of reusing one depth across the project.
Hardscape planning
Patios, walls, fences, and decks involve more than surface area. Their calculators include project-specific inputs such as block dimensions, panel spacing, board width, gaps, or base materials. Confirm local permits, utility locations, frost-depth requirements, drainage, and manufacturer instructions before construction.
How these calculators are checked
Each calculator displays the formula, worked example, assumptions, and relevant limitations on the page. We test default examples, decimals, invalid values, unit conversions, and whole-package rounding. Results are calculated before display rounding. Read more on How Our Calculators Work.
