Engine Compression Ratio Calculator

Calculate static geometric compression ratio from cylinder bore, stroke, clearance volume, gasket, deck, and piston volume.

Use the units shown beside each field. Decimal and scientific notation are accepted for non-integer fields; blanks, commas, fractions and non-finite entries are rejected.

Swept volume per cylinder499.5572142 cc
Total clearance volume60.9446787 cc
Static compression ratio9.196896347:1
Gasket volume5.944678699 cc

The displayed results apply to the default example. Enable JavaScript to calculate other inputs.

How to use this calculator

  1. Replace the example values with measurements or ratings for the exact vehicle, circuit, component or system.
  2. Keep every value in the labeled unit and use manufacturer data where available.
  3. Select Calculate, then review the result together with the limitations and safety notes.

Formula and method

Swept volume = π × bore² ÷ 4 × stroke. Clearance volume adds chamber, gasket, deck and signed piston volume. Compression ratio = (swept + clearance) ÷ clearance.

Calculations run in your browser. Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, preventing an older result from being mistaken for a new calculation.

Worked example

Cylinder bore = 86 mm; Stroke = 86 mm; Combustion chamber volume = 50 cc; Gasket bore = 87 mm; Compressed gasket thickness = 1 mm; Deck clearance = 0 mm; Piston dish volume = 5 cc. The calculator returns Swept volume per cylinder = 499.5572142 cc; Total clearance volume = 60.9446787 cc; Static compression ratio = 9.196896347:1; Gasket volume = 5.944678699 cc.

The worked example uses the same defaults shown in the interface, allowing the formula and displayed result to be checked together.

Limitations and safety

Sign conventions for piston dish and dome differ. This page treats a dish as positive added volume and a dome as negative. Measure components and follow builder specifications.

This is an educational planning model. Confirm ratings, tolerances, code requirements and safe procedures with manufacturers and qualified professionals before purchasing, modifying, wiring or operating equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Is static compression ratio the same as cylinder pressure?

No. Cylinder pressure also depends on valve timing, sealing, temperature, boost, cranking speed and operating conditions.

Why does the calculator reject my entry?

Each field shows its supported range. Whole-number fields reject decimals, and all fields reject blanks, words, comma-formatted numbers, fractions and non-finite values.

How should I use the displayed precision?

Keep extra digits while checking the calculation, then round to the precision supported by the measurements, component tolerances and published ratings.
