Vehicle Payload Capacity Calculator
Compare occupants, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight with an entered vehicle payload rating.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with measurements or ratings for the exact vehicle, circuit, component or system.
- Keep every value in the labeled unit and use manufacturer data where available.
- Select Calculate, then review the result together with the limitations and safety notes.
Formula and method
Payload used = occupants + cargo + added accessories + trailer tongue weight. Remaining payload = vehicle rating − payload used.
Calculations run in your browser. Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, preventing an older result from being mistaken for a new calculation.
Worked example
Vehicle payload rating = 1500 lb; Occupant weight = 500 lb; Cargo weight = 400 lb; Added accessories = 100 lb; Trailer tongue weight = 300 lb. The calculator returns Total payload used = 1300 lb; Remaining payload = 200 lb; Payload used = 86.66666667%; Over capacity = 0 lb.
The worked example uses the same defaults shown in the interface, allowing the formula and displayed result to be checked together.
Limitations and safety
Use the payload and axle ratings on the specific vehicle labels and manuals. This worksheet does not calculate axle distribution, towing capacity, tire capacity or structural safety; never exceed any rating.
This is an educational planning model. Confirm ratings, tolerances, code requirements and safe procedures with manufacturers and qualified professionals before purchasing, modifying, wiring or operating equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Does trailer tongue weight count as payload?
Yes. Tongue or pin weight carried by the tow vehicle consumes payload and also affects axle loading.
Why does the calculator reject my entry?
Each field shows its supported range. Whole-number fields reject decimals, and all fields reject blanks, words, comma-formatted numbers, fractions and non-finite values.
How should I use the displayed precision?
Keep extra digits while checking the calculation, then round to the precision supported by the measurements, component tolerances and published ratings.
