Drywall Joint Compound Calculator
Estimate joint-compound weight and bucket count from drywall area, coat count, application rate, waste, and bucket size.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with your own measurements or planning assumptions.
- Keep every value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate and review the result together with the formula and limitations below.
Formula and method
Multiply surface area divided by 100 by the application rate and coat count, then apply waste and divide by bucket weight.
Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, so an old answer cannot be mistaken for a current calculation.
Worked example
Drywall surface area = 2000 ft²; Number of coats = 3; Compound per 100 ft² per coat = 1.5 lb; Waste allowance = 10 %; Bucket weight = 61.7 lb. The calculator returns Compound required = 99 lb; Exact bucket requirement = 1.605 buckets; Whole buckets to buy = 2; Pounds per coat = 30 lb.
The worked example uses the same default values displayed in the calculator.
Limitations and safety
Frequently asked questions
Why is surface area not enough by itself?
Compound use also depends on seams, corners, fasteners, finish level, coat thickness, and the specific product’s application rate.
Why might the real result differ?
Joint count, bead, fasteners, finish level, taping method, product consistency, sanding loss, and installer technique can materially change usage.
How should I round the answer?
Keep extra precision while planning, then round up when purchasing whole containers, bags, pieces, or stock lengths. Follow the output labels and supplier packaging.
