How to use this calculator

  1. Replace the example values with your own measurements or planning assumptions.
  2. Keep every value in the unit printed beside its field.
  3. Select Calculate and review the result together with the formula and limitations below.

Formula and method

Multiply area by coats, divide by stated coverage, apply waste, then round up by container size and multiply by price.

Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, so an old answer cannot be mistaken for a current calculation.

Worked example

Paintable area = 1200 ft²; Number of coats = 2; Coverage per gallon = 350 ft²; Waste allowance = 10 %; Container size = 1 gal; Price per container = 45 $. The calculator returns Exact paint required = 7.543 gal; Whole containers to buy = 8; Paint purchased = 8 gal; Estimated material cost = $360.

The worked example uses the same default values displayed in the calculator.

Limitations and safety

Coverage varies with surface texture, porosity, color change, primer, application method, and product. Confirm the label and local price before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the purchased amount exceed the exact gallons?

Paint is sold in fixed container sizes, so the calculator rounds the container count up to cover the estimated requirement.

Why might the real result differ?

Coverage varies with surface texture, porosity, color change, primer, application method, and product. Confirm the label and local price before buying.

How should I round the answer?

Keep extra precision while planning, then round up when purchasing whole containers, bags, pieces, or stock lengths. Follow the output labels and supplier packaging.
