Downspout Sizing Calculator
Estimate how many equal-capacity downspouts are needed from design runoff, capacity per downspout and a planning safety factor.
How to use this calculator
- Replace every example value with your own measurements, label values or planning assumptions.
- Keep each value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate, then compare the result with the formula and limitations below.
Formula and method
Design flow = required flow × safety factor. Minimum count = round up(design flow ÷ rated capacity per downspout).
Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, so an older answer cannot be mistaken for the current calculation.
Worked example
Required gutter flow = 30 gal/min; Rated capacity per downspout = 12 gal/min; Safety factor = 1.25 multiplier. The calculator returns Minimum downspouts = 4 downspouts; Design flow with safety factor = 37.5 gal/min; Installed rated capacity = 48 gal/min.
The worked example uses the same default values displayed in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What should I enter first?
Start with measurements or rates from the project, product label, service quote or equipment specification. Replace every example value before relying on the estimate.
Why can the real result differ?
Manufacturer ratings and local drainage codes control. Outlet shape, elbows, screens, underground piping, debris and placement can reduce capacity; confirm the complete system design.
Does the calculator round purchases up?
Only outputs labeled as whole packages, vents, heaters, pails or similar counts are rounded up. Keep extra precision for planning and follow supplier packaging.
