How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the project or enter costs from a current quote or product label.
  2. Adjust the quantities, coverage, package size, and allowances to match your situation.
  3. Select Calculate, then check the method, worked example, and limitations below.

Formula and method

Quarts = area × coats ÷ coverage per quart × (1 + waste%). Round whole cans up.

Whole packages and pieces are rounded up. Results disappear when an input changes until the new values are calculated.

Worked example

Surface area 180 sq ft; Coats 2 coats; Coverage per quart 100 sq ft/quart; Waste allowance 12 %; Can size 1 quarts. Results: Finish needed 4.03 quarts; Whole cans 5 cans.

The example uses the values initially displayed in the fields.

Limitations

Porous wood, application method, sanding, and product directions affect coverage and recoat requirements.
