How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the project or enter costs from a current quote or product label.
  2. Adjust the quantities, coverage, package size, and allowances to match your situation.
  3. Select Calculate, then check the method, worked example, and limitations below.

Formula and method

Savings per purchase = purchase amount × discount% + extra savings. Break-even purchases = annual fee ÷ savings per purchase, rounded up.

Whole packages and pieces are rounded up. Results disappear when an input changes until the new values are calculated.

Worked example

Annual membership fee 80 $; Typical purchase amount 50 $; Member discount 10 %; Extra savings per purchase 2 $. Results: Savings per purchase $7.00; Purchases to break even 12 purchases.

The example uses the values initially displayed in the fields.

Limitations

Excluded items, caps, shipping, taxes, and actual spending may change the break-even point; do not buy extra items solely to recoup a fee.
