Retaining walls can require engineered drainage, reinforcement, setbacks, and permits. Consult a professional for tall or load-bearing walls. Read our advertising disclosure.

How this calculator works

Blocks per course and the number of courses are rounded up. Waste is added to the block and cap counts. Base aggregate is estimated from the entered trench dimensions.

Use actual block dimensions

Manufacturers may list nominal and actual face dimensions. Use the installed face length and face height, and follow the product instructions for buried courses, setbacks, corners, caps, geogrid, drainage stone, and adhesive.

Check engineering requirements

Wall height, slope, soil, water, surcharge loads, property lines, and local rules can change the design. Taller or load-bearing walls may require permits and engineered plans. This tool is only an early material estimate.

Retaining-wall example

A 24-foot wall with a 3-foot exposed height has 72 square feet of wall face. If the selected block covers 0.5 square foot on its installed face, the starting quantity is 144 blocks. Adding 10% for cuts, breakage, buried units, and future matching produces 158.4, which rounds to 159 blocks. Cap units, corners, curves, steps, and different block sizes require separate counts.

Do not use block count as structural design

Measure the buried base course, leveling pad, drainage stone, backfill, geotextile, pipe, caps, and excavation independently. Soil, groundwater, surcharge loads, slopes, frost, wall height, and manufacturer limits affect reinforcement and engineering requirements. Tall or load-bearing walls may require permits and professional design. Follow the selected system’s installation manual and local rules.
