Find the difference between dates
How to use the date difference calculator
Choose any two calendar dates. The calculator reports the absolute number of elapsed days, expresses that interval as whole weeks plus remaining days, separates Monday-through-Friday days from weekend days, and shows which date comes first.
Date difference method
Elapsed days = absolute difference between the two UTC calendar dates / 86,400,000 milliseconds
Using UTC calendar values avoids daylight-saving-time changes that can make a local day appear to be 23 or 25 hours. Weekday counting excludes the start date and includes the later endpoint. Public holidays are not recognized.
Worked example
From September 1, 2026 to September 28, 2026 there are 27 elapsed days, equal to 3 weeks and 6 days. Crossing the interval after the start date reaches 19 weekdays and 8 weekend days.
Accuracy and assumptions
- Both inputs are interpreted as Gregorian calendar dates.
- The start date itself is not counted as an elapsed day.
- Monday through Friday are treated as weekdays.
- Public holidays, business closures, and work schedules are not removed.
- The calculation uses calendar dates rather than elapsed clock hours.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the start date excluded?
A difference measures how many day boundaries separate two dates. Consecutive dates are one day apart, not two.
Does this count holidays?
No. The weekday result only separates Monday through Friday from Saturday and Sunday.
What happens if the end date is earlier?
The tool reports the absolute interval and separately identifies that the end date is earlier.
