Find the mean, median, sum, count, range, minimum, and maximum for a list of numbers.
Calculate mean, median, and range
Paste or type a set of numbers to see its arithmetic mean, count, sum, median, minimum, maximum, and range. Commas, spaces, semicolons, and line breaks are accepted as separators.
Median = middle value after sorting
Range = maximum − minimum
Worked example
For 12, 18, 7, 23, and 15, the sum is 75 and the count is 5. The mean is 75 ÷ 5 = 15. Sorted values are 7, 12, 15, 18, 23, so the median is also 15 and the range is 23 − 7 = 16.
Mean versus median
The mean uses every value and can be pulled toward an unusually large or small observation. The median is the middle of the ordered list and is often more resistant to extreme values. Neither measure is universally better; the data and question determine which summary is more informative.
- For an odd count, the median is the single middle sorted value.
- For an even count, the median is the mean of the two middle sorted values.
- The range shows total spread but depends only on the smallest and largest observations.
- Use consistently measured values and avoid mixing units or unrelated groups.
Frequently asked questions
Is the average always one of the numbers?
No. The arithmetic mean can fall between observed values. It represents an equal-share balance point, not necessarily an item in the list.
Can I enter decimals and negative numbers?
Yes. Standard decimal notation and negative signs are accepted. Avoid thousands separators inside a number because commas are treated as separators between values.
What happens with a single value?
Its mean, median, minimum, and maximum are all that value; the range is zero.
How to get a dependable result
- Use nameplate ratings or manufacturer specifications when they are available.
- Keep every input in the unit shown beside its field.
- Treat calculated values as planning estimates; real equipment, batteries, and conductors have losses, tolerances, and operating limits.
