Cooking Measurement Converter
Convert U.S. kitchen volume measures and metric milliliters or liters for recipe planning.
Volume conversions do not convert an ingredient’s volume to weight.
How it works
Enter an amount, choose its current unit, and select the unit you want. The calculator converts through milliliters so every supported pair works.
Formula
Converted amount = entered amount × milliliters per source unit ÷ milliliters per destination unit.
Worked example
One U.S. cup converts to approximately 236.588 milliliters. NIST’s practical kitchen guidance often rounds a cup to 240 mL.
Important limits
- These are U.S. customary liquid-volume conversions; an imperial cup or fluid ounce is different.
- Volume-to-weight conversion requires the specific ingredient’s bulk density.
- Measuring spoons, cups, and ingredient packing introduce real-world variation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert cups to grams?
Not without choosing an ingredient. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar have different masses.
Why do some recipes say one cup is 240 mL?
Kitchen references commonly use convenient rounded metric equivalents, while this calculator uses the more precise U.S. customary conversion.
