SCIENCE CALCULATOR
Force Calculator
Calculate force from mass and acceleration using Newton’s second-law relationship.
How it works
Enter mass and acceleration with their units. The calculator converts to kilograms and meters per second squared, then multiplies them.
Formula
Force F = mass m × acceleration a. One newton is the force needed to accelerate one kilogram at one meter per second squared.
Worked example
A 10 kg mass accelerating at 9.80665 m/s² corresponds to about 98.0665 N, or 22.0462 pound-force.
Important limits
- This is a scalar magnitude calculation and does not resolve vector direction or multiple forces.
- Pounds mass and pound-force are different quantities.
- Real systems may require free-body diagrams, friction, drag, and other forces.
Frequently asked questions
Is mass the same as weight?
No. Mass measures matter; weight is a force caused by gravitational acceleration.
Can acceleration be negative?
Yes. The sign can represent direction along a chosen axis. The displayed force carries the corresponding sign.
