Work Calculator
SCIENCE CALCULATOR
Calculate mechanical work from force, displacement, and the angle between them, with optional average power over time.
Mechanical work433.0127 J
Force along motion86.6025 N
Average power43.3013 W
How it works
Only the component of force parallel to displacement performs mechanical work in this model. Average power divides that work by elapsed time.
Formulas
Work W = Fd cos(θ)
Average power P = W ÷ t
Example
A 100 N force acting over 5 m at 30° performs about 433.0127 joules of work. Over 10 seconds, average power is about 43.3013 watts.
Important limits
- The formula assumes constant force and a straight displacement.
- A result can be negative when the force opposes motion.
- This simplified model does not include changing force, friction unless entered as force, or rotational work.
Frequently asked questions
When is work zero?
Work is zero when there is no displacement or when force is perpendicular to displacement.
What is one joule?
One joule equals one newton-meter of mechanical work.
