Irrigation Runtime Calculator
HOME & OUTDOOR PLANNING
Estimate irrigation runtime from a chosen water depth and measured sprinkler precipitation rate.
Use the units shown. All fields are required; absolute values cannot exceed one trillion. This tool does not prescribe how much water a plant needs. Rain, soil infiltration, runoff, wind, distribution uniformity, and local watering restrictions affect scheduling. Split runtime into cycles when appropriate to avoid runoff.
How to use this calculator
Replace the example inputs with your own measured values, using the units beside each field. Select Calculate, then compare results under different practical assumptions. Keep extra precision in measurements until the final answer.
Formula and explanation
Runtime in minutes = target water depth ÷ precipitation rate × 60
Use a catch-can test or a reliable measured system rate. A 0.5-inch application at 1.2 inches per hour takes 25 minutes in the ideal uniform model.
Worked example
With Water depth to apply (inches) = 0.5, Measured precipitation rate (inches/hour) = 1.2, the results are Required runtime (minutes): 25; Applied depth (mm): 12.7; Precipitation rate (mm/hour): 30.48.
Important limitations
This tool does not prescribe how much water a plant needs. Rain, soil infiltration, runoff, wind, distribution uniformity, and local watering restrictions affect scheduling. Split runtime into cycles when appropriate to avoid runoff.
These are planning estimates. Confirm actual measurements, product instructions, site conditions, and any applicable project requirements before purchase or installation.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a watering recommendation?
No. You choose the target depth based on your plants, soil, weather, and appropriate guidance.
Why use a measured rate?
Nozzle specifications may not represent the actual pressure, spacing, or distribution in your yard.
Can I mix measurement units?
No. Convert values to the units shown beside the fields first. The result labels identify the output units.
What happens when inputs are invalid?
Blank, negative where disallowed, nonfinite, or out-of-range values clear the old results and show an instruction.
