Root Mean Square Calculator
Calculate the RMS, arithmetic mean, and number of samples from a list of real values. Start with the example or enter your own numbers.
Enter 1 to 1,000 finite real numbers separated by commas, spaces, or newlines. Negative numbers and zero are valid. Each magnitude must not exceed 1 trillion.
How to use
Enter the required numbers and select Calculate. Default results appear on page load. Invalid entries clear previous results and explain the problem. Answers display up to ten significant digits, so long results are rounded.
Formula and explanation
RMS = √((x₁² + x₂² + … + xₙ²)/n). Arithmetic mean = (x₁ + … + xₙ)/n. Squaring removes each value’s sign; taking the square root returns the original input units. The calculation scales values by the largest magnitude before squaring to reduce numerical overflow.
Worked example
For 3 and 4, mean square is (9 + 16)/2 = 12.5, RMS is √12.5 ≈ 3.53553, and arithmetic mean is 3.5.
Important limitations
Treats every sample equally. For uneven time intervals or weighted observations, this unweighted RMS may be inappropriate. Electrical RMS of sampled data requires suitable sampling and measurement; this tool does not infer waveform shape, frequency, power, or safe electrical ratings. Rounded data produces rounded estimates.
Frequently asked questions
Can values be negative?
Yes. RMS uses squared magnitudes and is always nonnegative.
Why is RMS different from the average?
The arithmetic mean allows positive and negative values to cancel; RMS measures their squared magnitude.
Can I paste spreadsheet values?
Yes. Spaces, tabs, newlines, and commas separate values. Use a dot for decimals and omit thousands separators.
Is RMS the same as standard deviation?
No. Standard deviation measures spread around the mean; RMS measures magnitude relative to zero.
