Piston Speed Calculator

Calculate mean piston speed in metres per second and feet per minute from stroke and engine RPM. Start with the prefilled example or enter your dimensions.

Stroke must be positive and no more than 10,000 mm. RPM must be nonnegative and no more than 1,000,000. All fields are required.

Mean piston speed (m/s)—
Mean piston speed (ft/min)—
Piston travel per revolution (m)—

How to use

Measure piston stroke from top dead center to bottom dead center. Use millimetres for length fields and the specified units for other inputs. Select Calculate after changing values. Default results appear on page load. Outputs use up to ten significant digits; actual measurement accuracy may be much lower.

Formula and explanation

Mean piston speed = 2 × S × RPM / 60, where stroke S is in metres. Each crankshaft revolution moves the piston through one downstroke and one upstroke, totaling 2S. Feet per minute = 2 × S × RPM / 0.3048. Convert entered millimetres to metres by dividing by 1,000.

Worked example

An 86 mm stroke at 6,000 RPM gives 17.2 m/s mean piston speed, about 3,385.83 ft/min. Piston travel is 0.172 m per crankshaft revolution.

Limitations and professional guidance

This is average travel speed, not instantaneous or peak piston velocity. Connecting-rod geometry, crank position, acceleration, material strength, lubrication, temperature, and component condition are excluded. No universal safe-speed threshold is supplied. This tool does not establish a redline or authorize engine modifications; follow manufacturer ratings and qualified engine-builder advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this peak piston speed?

No. The piston slows to zero at each end and travels faster between ends. This is average distance traveled per unit time.

Does bore affect this result?

No. Mean piston speed depends on stroke and crankshaft RPM.

Does a four-stroke engine use a different formula?

No. The piston still travels two stroke lengths per crank revolution.

What happens at zero RPM?

Mean speed is zero; geometric travel per revolution remains twice the stroke.
