Board and Batten Layout Calculator

Create an evenly spaced board-and-batten layout from the finished wall width, batten width, and desired maximum clear spacing. The calculator places a vertical batten at each end, determines the number of spaces, and reports the actual equal gap. Add horizontal rails, waste, and a price per linear foot for a material estimate.

How this calculator works

Spaces = round up((wall width − batten width) ÷ (target gap + batten width)). Batten count = spaces + 1. Equal clear gap = (wall width − total batten width) ÷ spaces.

Use the finished wall width

Measure between the exact finished boundaries where the first and last battens will sit. Base the calculation on the visible face width of the battens, not their nominal name. The tool assumes both edge battens are included and all clear gaps are equal. If you prefer equal center-to-center spacing or no edge battens, use a separate layout method.

Worked example

For a 12-foot wall with 2.5-inch battens and a maximum 16-inch clear gap, the calculator creates eight spaces and nine battens. The equal clear gap is about 15.19 inches. With 4-foot battens, two 12-foot rails, and 10% waste, the purchase quantity is about 66 linear feet.

Lay out around real wall features

A mathematically even layout may place a batten over an outlet, switch, window casing, inside corner, or weak fastening location. Mark the full wall on paper or with painter’s tape before cutting. Small spacing adjustments across the wall are usually less noticeable than a visibly awkward narrow panel at one end.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include battens at both wall edges?

Yes. It assumes one vertical batten at each finished boundary and divides the remaining space evenly.

What if an outlet lands behind a batten?

Adjust the layout or detail before cutting. Confirm safe clearances and do not cover electrical devices or interfere with wiring.

Can I use this for exterior siding?

The spacing math can help with a sketch, but exterior assemblies require manufacturer instructions, flashing, drainage, fastening, expansion, weather exposure, and code considerations not covered here.
