Caulk Coverage Calculator

HOME & OUTDOOR PLANNING

Estimate sealant volume, whole tubes, and coverage for a continuous round bead.

Use the units shown. All fields are required; absolute values cannot exceed one trillion. A tooled triangular bead, deep joint, or backer-rod joint needs a different cross-section model. Use the product’s actual usable tube volume and joint instructions. This estimate does not specify joint design or sealant compatibility.

Ideal bead volume (mL)392.6990817
Volume including waste (mL)451.603944
Whole tubes to purchase2
Ideal coverage per tube (meters)15.27887454

How to use this calculator

Replace the example inputs with your own measured values, using the units beside each field. Select Calculate, then compare results under different practical assumptions. Keep extra precision in measurements until the final answer.

Formula and explanation

Volume in mL = π × diameter(mm)² × length(m) / 4; required volume = volume × (1 + waste/100); tubes = round up(required volume / usable tube volume)

The calculation treats the bead as a circular cylinder. A larger diameter increases volume with the square of that diameter.

Worked example

With Total bead length (meters) = 20, Round bead diameter (mm) = 5, Usable volume per tube (mL) = 300, Waste allowance (%) = 15, the results are Ideal bead volume (mL): 392.69908; Volume including waste (mL): 451.60394; Whole tubes to purchase: 2; Ideal coverage per tube (meters): 15.278875.

Important limitations

A tooled triangular bead, deep joint, or backer-rod joint needs a different cross-section model. Use the product's actual usable tube volume and joint instructions. This estimate does not specify joint design or sealant compatibility.

These are planning estimates. Confirm actual measurements, product instructions, site conditions, and any applicable project requirements before purchase or installation.

Frequently asked questions

What if my joint is rectangular?

This circular-bead model is unsuitable; calculate the actual joint cross-sectional area instead.

Why add waste?

Nozzle residue, starts and stops, overfill, and cleanup may consume additional sealant.

Can I mix measurement units?

No. Convert values to the units shown beside the fields first. The result labels identify the output units.

What happens when inputs are invalid?

Blank, negative where disallowed, nonfinite, or out-of-range values clear the old results and show an instruction.
