Concrete Block Calculator

CONSTRUCTION CALCULATOR

Estimate the number of concrete masonry units needed for a rectangular wall after subtracting openings and adding waste.

Net wall area216 ft²
Base block count243
Blocks with waste256
Layout estimate23 rows × 23 blocks/row

How it works

Net wall area is divided by the nominal face area of one block. Waste is applied to the base quantity, while rows and blocks per row provide a simple rectangular layout check.

Formula

Blocks = (wall area − openings) ÷ block face area × (1 + waste)

Important limits

  • Nominal dimensions normally include the mortar joint.
  • Bond patterns, cut blocks, corners, pilasters, lintels, and reinforcement can change quantity.
  • This calculator does not design a structural wall or estimate mortar and grout.

Frequently asked questions

Why use nominal block size?

A nominal 8 × 8 × 16 block typically includes the planned mortar-joint module.

Should openings be subtracted completely?

Large openings usually are; small openings may not save whole blocks because of cuts and layout.
