CONVERSION CALCULATOR

Convert digital storage units, including bits and bytes, decimal kilobytes through terabytes, and binary kibibytes through tebibytes.

How it works

Every unit is converted to bytes first. Decimal units use powers of 1,000; IEC binary units use powers of 1,024.

Conversion formula

Decimal: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. 1 byte = 8 bits.

Worked example

5 GiB equals 5.36870912 GB.

Important limits

  • Device manufacturers commonly advertise decimal capacity, while operating systems may report binary-style values.
  • This measures capacity, not transfer speed.
  • Formatted usable space can be smaller because of file systems, recovery partitions, and reserved storage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB is decimal and equals 10⁹ bytes; GiB is binary and equals 2³⁰ bytes.

How many bits are in a byte?

A byte contains eight bits.

Review notes

Decimal prefixes follow powers of 1,000 and IEC binary prefixes follow powers of 1,024. Last reviewed September 30, 2026.
