Deck Stain Calculator
PROJECT CALCULATOR
Estimate stain or sealer quantity for a deck surface using area, coats, product coverage, and overage.
How it works
Deck area is multiplied by the number of coats, divided by label coverage, and increased by your extra allowance. Purchase quantity rounds up to whole gallons.
Formula
Gallons = area × coats ÷ coverage × (1 + extra)
Important limits
- Railings, stairs, fascia, posts, and both sides of boards require separate area.
- Coverage changes with wood porosity, condition, application method, and product.
- Use the manufacturer’s label for coat count, spread rate, and preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Should new wood be stained immediately?
Follow the product and lumber guidance; moisture content and mill glaze can affect absorption.
Why add extra?
Extra allows for surface texture, application loss, touch-ups, and future color matching.
Estimating deck stain accurately
Measure the stainable surface, including the deck boards, exposed edges, steps, railings, posts, and any underside areas you plan to coat. Subtract only openings or surfaces that truly will not receive stain. Multiply by the planned number of coats, then divide by the manufacturer’s coverage rate.
Coverage varies with wood species, age, porosity, surface preparation, application method, and product type. New smooth boards may absorb differently from weathered or pressure-washed wood. Add a practical allowance for overlap, end grain, and touch-ups, and round up to available can sizes. Check whether the second-coat coverage differs from the first and whether unused product can be stored safely for future maintenance.
