Gable Wall Area Calculator
Estimate rectangular wall area plus triangular gable area, then subtract openings and apply waste.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with your own measurements or planning assumptions.
- Keep every value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate and review the result together with the formula and limitations below.
Formula and method
Rectangle area is width times wall height. Gable area is one-half times width times rise. Subtract openings, then apply waste.
Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, so an old answer cannot be mistaken for a current calculation.
Worked example
Wall width = 30 ft; Rectangular wall height = 10 ft; Gable rise = 6 ft; Door and window openings = 120 ft²; Waste allowance = 10 %. The calculator returns Rectangle area = 300 ft²; Gable triangle area = 90 ft²; Net wall area = 270 ft²; Area with waste = 297 ft².
The worked example uses the same default values displayed in the calculator.
Limitations and safety
Frequently asked questions
Is the gable rise the same as total wall height?
No. Enter only the vertical height of the triangular gable above the rectangular wall section.
Why might the real result differ?
This estimates surface area only. It does not design framing, sheathing layout, siding exposure, structural bracing, fastening, flashing, or code compliance.
How should I round the answer?
Keep extra precision while planning, then round up when purchasing whole containers, bags, pieces, or stock lengths. Follow the output labels and supplier packaging.
