DIY Cost Tools
Mortar Calculator
Estimate wet mortar volume and bag count from masonry-unit count, mortar volume per unit, waste, and bag yield.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with your own measurements or planning assumptions.
- Keep every value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate and review the result together with the formula and limitations below.
Formula and method
Multiply unit count by mortar volume per unit, apply waste, convert cubic feet to cubic yards, and divide by the bag’s stated yield.
Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, so an old answer cannot be mistaken for a current calculation.
Worked example
Masonry units = 500; Mortar per unit = 0.03 ft³; Waste allowance = 10 %; Yield per bag = 0.6 ft³. The calculator returns Wet mortar required = 16.5 ft³; Wet mortar required = 0.611 yd³; Exact bag requirement = 27.5 bags; Whole bags to buy = 28.
The worked example uses the same default values displayed in the calculator.
Limitations and safety
Frequently asked questions
What should I use for mortar per masonry unit?
Use a project-specific takeoff or manufacturer estimate based on your unit size and joint dimensions; the default is only an example.
Why might the real result differ?
Joint width, unit dimensions, cores, tooling, spillage, substrate, and product yield change consumption. Use the manufacturer’s coverage and local masonry requirements.
How should I round the answer?
Keep extra precision while planning, then round up when purchasing whole containers, bags, pieces, or stock lengths. Follow the output labels and supplier packaging.
