How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the project or enter costs from a current quote or product label.
  2. Adjust the quantities, coverage, package size, and allowances to match your situation.
  3. Select Calculate, then check the method, worked example, and limitations below.

Formula and method

Edged perimeter = max(0, 2 × (length + width) − opening). Add allowance and divide by piece length, rounding up.

Whole packages and pieces are rounded up. Results disappear when an input changes until the new values are calculated.

Worked example

Patio length 20 ft; Patio width 12 ft; Unedged opening 4 ft; Cutting allowance 10 %; Edging piece length 6 ft. Results: Edging length 66 ft; Whole pieces 11 pieces.

The example uses the values initially displayed in the fields.

Limitations

An opening cannot exceed the perimeter; irregular edges, curves, spikes, and vendor bundle sizes require separate planning. The unedged opening must not exceed the patio perimeter.
