Potential Energy Calculator

SCIENCE CALCULATOR

Estimate gravitational potential energy near a surface with approximately constant gravity.

Use consistent units. All fields are required; absolute input values must not exceed one trillion. Constant-gravity mgh is a near-surface approximation.

Potential energy relative to reference (J)490.5
Weight force (N)98.1

How to use this calculator

Replace the example inputs with your measurements, then select Calculate. Results use the units shown beside each field. Keep extra precision in the inputs and round only when recording the final answer.

Formula and explanation

Potential energy = mgh; weight force = mg

The height is measured from a reference level you choose. A negative height gives negative energy relative to that level; energy differences are what matter.

Worked example

With Mass (kg) = 10, Height above reference (m) = 5, Gravitational acceleration (m/s²) = 9.81, the results are Potential energy relative to reference (J): 490.5; Weight force (N): 98.1.

Important limitations

Constant-gravity mgh is a near-surface approximation. It is unsuitable for orbital mechanics or large altitude changes and does not certify lifting-system safety.

Results are estimates based on the entered values. Numeric precision does not eliminate measurement uncertainty.

Frequently asked questions

Why can energy be negative?

The zero of potential energy is a chosen reference. Being below that reference gives a negative value.

Is mass the same as weight?

No. Mass is measured in kilograms; weight is a force measured in newtons and depends on gravity.

What happens if I leave a field blank?

The tool clears the previous result and asks for valid inputs, so an old answer is not mistaken for a new calculation.
