DIY Cost Tools
Rafter Length Calculator
Calculate the theoretical line length of a common rafter from the horizontal run and roof pitch. Add a horizontal overhang, enter the number of rafters, apply a waste allowance, and estimate lumber cost per linear foot. This tool does not calculate birdsmouth cuts, ridge deductions, hip or valley rafters, or structural sizing.
How this calculator works
Pitch factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). Rafter line length = (horizontal run + horizontal overhang) × pitch factor. Total purchase length adds the waste allowance.
Measure horizontal run, not roof surface
The run is the horizontal distance from the outside wall line to the ridge centerline for a symmetrical gable roof. It is usually half the building span, but wall thickness, ridge details, and the specific framing plan can change the reference points. The pitch is expressed as inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
Worked example
With a 12-foot horizontal run, a 6-in-12 pitch, and a 1-foot horizontal overhang, the pitch factor is about 1.118. The main theoretical line length is about 13.42 feet, and the line length including overhang is about 14.53 feet. Fourteen rafters plus 10% waste total roughly 224 linear feet.
Cuts and deductions are separate
A field-cut rafter needs more than a hypotenuse calculation. Ridge-board thickness, plumb cuts, seat cuts, birdsmouth limits, fascia details, tail shape, and layout marks all affect the actual board and cut locations. Hip, valley, jack, and irregular rafters require different geometry.
Important planning checks
- Confirm the span, run reference points, pitch, ridge detail, and overhang on approved plans.
- Do not size rafters from length alone; loads, species, grade, spacing, span tables, and connections matter.
- Use stock long enough for each rafter unless an approved splice detail is provided.
- Follow fall-protection, ladder, scaffold, saw, and local permit requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is rafter run half the building width?
Often it is for a centered ridge on a symmetrical gable roof, but wall and ridge details can change the exact measurement.
Does the result include the birdsmouth?
No. The result is theoretical line length. Seat cuts, plumb cuts, ridge deductions, and fascia details must be laid out separately.
Can this size the rafter lumber?
No. Lumber size depends on structural loads, span, spacing, species, grade, connections, and local code.
