DIY Cost Tools
Streaming Data Usage Calculator
Estimate data consumption from a stream’s average bitrate, daily viewing time, and number of days.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with your own measurements, schedule, prices, or media settings.
- Keep each value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate and review every result together with the assumptions below.
Formula and method
GB per hour = Mbit/s × 3,600 ÷ 8,000. Daily and total use multiply by viewing hours and days.
Calculations run in your browser. Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, preventing an old answer from being mistaken for the current calculation.
Worked example
Average stream bitrate = 6 Mbit/s; Viewing hours per day = 3 hours; Number of days = 30. The calculator returns Data per viewing hour = 2.7 GB; Average data per day = 8.1 GB; Total data = 243 GB; Total data = 226.3113856 GiB.
The worked example uses the same default values shown in the interface, so the displayed result and explanation can be checked directly.
Limitations
Adaptive streaming changes bitrate with quality, device, content and connection conditions. Ads, browsing, updates and other household traffic are not included.
Use the result as a planning estimate. Confirm prices, policies, equipment ratings, units and professional requirements that apply to your situation.
Frequently asked questions
Does resolution alone determine data use?
No. Codec, frame rate, compression settings and service-specific encoding all affect bitrate at the same resolution.
Why does the calculator reject my entry?
Each field shows its supported range. Whole-number fields reject decimals, and all fields reject blanks, words, comma-formatted numbers, fractions and non-finite values.
How should I round the result?
Keep extra digits while planning, then round to the precision supported by your inputs, package sizes, billing rules or equipment settings.
