How this volume converter works

The calculator converts the entered amount to liters and uses that base value to produce each result. It covers both liquid measures commonly used in the United States and three-dimensional units useful for containers, fill quantities, and project planning.

Common U.S. volume relationships

  • 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
  • 2 tablespoons = 1 U.S. fluid ounce
  • 8 U.S. fluid ounces = 1 U.S. cup
  • 2 cups = 1 pint
  • 2 pints = 1 quart
  • 4 quarts = 1 U.S. gallon
  • 1 U.S. gallon = 3.785411784 liters = 231 cubic inches

Worked example: one U.S. gallon

One U.S. liquid gallon equals 3.785411784 liters. It also equals 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups, 128 U.S. fluid ounces, 256 tablespoons, 768 teaspoons, 231 cubic inches, or approximately 0.133681 cubic foot.

U.S. units versus Imperial units

This tool uses U.S. customary liquid measures. An Imperial gallon is larger than a U.S. gallon, and an Imperial fluid ounce is different from a U.S. fluid ounce. Confirm which system appears on a plan, product label, recipe, or specification before ordering materials.

Volume is not weight

A cup, liter, or cubic foot describes space, not mass. The weight of that volume depends on the material's density. One cup of water does not weigh the same as one cup of sand, oil, or dry cement. For dry ingredients, use a material-specific weight conversion when accuracy matters.

Frequently asked questions

How many liters are in a U.S. gallon?

One U.S. liquid gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 liters.

How many cubic inches are in a gallon?

One U.S. liquid gallon contains exactly 231 cubic inches.

Can I use this for cooking?

Yes for U.S. liquid-volume conversions, but check the measurement system used by the recipe. The calculator does not convert volume to grams because that requires the ingredient's density.
