Wavelength Calculator
SCIENCE CALCULATOR
Calculate wavelength and period from wave speed and frequency.
Use consistent units. All fields are required; absolute input values must not exceed one trillion. Wave speed can depend on temperature, medium, and frequency.
How to use this calculator
Replace the example inputs with your measurements, then select Calculate. Results use the units shown beside each field. Keep extra precision in the inputs and round only when recording the final answer.
Formula and explanation
Wavelength = wave speed ÷ frequency; period = 1 ÷ frequency
One wavelength is the distance a wave travels during one cycle. Use the speed appropriate to the wave and the medium.
Worked example
With Wave speed (m/s) = 343, Frequency (Hz) = 1000, the results are Wavelength (m): 0.343; Period (s): 0.001.
Important limitations
Wave speed can depend on temperature, medium, and frequency. The 343 m/s default is an illustrative sound-speed assumption, not a measurement or a universal constant.
Results are estimates based on the entered values. Numeric precision does not eliminate measurement uncertainty.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for light?
Yes, if you enter the appropriate light speed for the medium and frequency in hertz.
Why does higher frequency mean a shorter wavelength?
At a fixed speed, more cycles must fit into the same distance.
What happens if I leave a field blank?
The tool clears the previous result and asks for valid inputs, so an old answer is not mistaken for a new calculation.
