Aquarium Water Change Calculator
Plan water-change volume and long-run water use from tank size, filled percentage, change percentage, and interval.
How to use this calculator
- Replace the example values with your own measurements, schedule, prices, or media settings.
- Keep each value in the unit printed beside its field.
- Select Calculate and review every result together with the assumptions below.
Formula and method
Actual water = nominal volume × fill percentage. Water per change = actual water × change percentage. Long-run use divides calendar days by the interval.
Calculations run in your browser. Results are hidden whenever an input changes or validation fails, preventing an old answer from being mistaken for the current calculation.
Worked example
Nominal tank volume = 55 gal; Actual fill percentage = 90 %; Water changed each time = 25 %; Days between changes = 7 days. The calculator returns Estimated actual water volume = 49.5 gal; Water per change = 12.375 gal; Average changes per month = 4.348125; Average monthly water = 53.80804688 gal; Average annual water = 645.6965625 gal.
The worked example uses the same default values shown in the interface, so the displayed result and explanation can be checked directly.
Limitations
This page plans volume only. Appropriate frequency, temperature, conditioning and water parameters depend on the aquarium and livestock; follow qualified husbandry guidance.
Use the result as a planning estimate. Confirm prices, policies, equipment ratings, units and professional requirements that apply to your situation.
Frequently asked questions
Should substrate displacement be included?
Yes. Lower the actual fill percentage to approximate displacement from substrate, rocks, décor and equipment.
Why does the calculator reject my entry?
Each field shows its supported range. Whole-number fields reject decimals, and all fields reject blanks, words, comma-formatted numbers, fractions and non-finite values.
How should I round the result?
Keep extra digits while planning, then round to the precision supported by your inputs, package sizes, billing rules or equipment settings.
