Estimate dry pet food cost
How to use the pet food cost calculator
Enter the daily dry-food amount for one pet from the product label or your veterinarian, the number of pets eating that amount, the bag weight, the product's approximate cups per pound, and the bag price. The calculator estimates how long the bag lasts and the average monthly and annual food cost.
Pet food cost formulas
Bag cups = bag pounds x cups per pound; days per bag = bag cups / total daily cups
Cost per cup equals bag price divided by estimated cups in the bag. Monthly cost uses the average month length of 30.4375 days, and annual cost uses 365 days.
Worked example
One pet eating 2 cups per day uses a 24-pound bag containing about 4 cups per pound in 48 days. If the bag costs $48, the estimated average is $30.44 per month and $365 per year.
Feeding guidance and safety
The Association of American Feed Control Officials explains that label feeding directions are guidelines and may need adjustment for an individual pet. Use a food appropriate for the pet and life stage, measure consistently, monitor condition, and consult a veterinarian about feeding changes or health concerns.
Accuracy and assumptions
- This tool is designed for dry food measured in cups.
- Cups per pound varies with kibble size, shape, and density; use the manufacturer's figure when available.
- Every entered pet is assumed to eat the same daily amount.
- Treats, wet food, supplements, tax, shipping, and waste are excluded.
- A cost estimate must never replace veterinary feeding guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find cups per pound?
Check the bag, manufacturer website, or customer support. Dividing bag weight into an assumed cup count can be inaccurate when kibble density differs.
Can I use this for cats and dogs?
Yes, for dry food when you already have an appropriate daily amount and cups-per-pound value. The calculator does not choose that amount.
Why is the monthly cost an average?
Calendar months have different lengths. The estimate uses 365 days divided by 12.
