DIY Cost Tools
Asphalt Calculator
CONSTRUCTION CALCULATOR
Estimate asphalt volume, delivered weight, and material cost for a rectangular driveway, parking area, or patch.
How it works
The calculator converts compacted depth to feet, finds cubic volume, applies your density and overage, then converts pounds to US short tons.
Formula
Cubic feet = length × width × depth ÷ 12
Tons = cubic feet × density ÷ 2,000 × (1 + overage)
Important limits
- Actual mix density, compaction, base condition, minimum load, and delivery rules vary.
- Use the compacted lift depth, not loose depth.
- Professional design may be needed for traffic loads, drainage, and local specifications.
Frequently asked questions
Why is density adjustable?
Asphalt mixes and compaction levels differ, so supplier density is more reliable than a universal assumption.
Does cost include labor?
No. The result uses only entered tons and price per ton.
Turning asphalt volume into tonnage
Measure paved area and compacted thickness consistently, then calculate volume before applying an asphalt density. The final tonnage depends on the specified mix and density, so use the plant or contractor value when available rather than a generic assumption.
Order calculations should reflect the compacted design thickness, not only the loose depth placed before rolling. Irregular edges, transitions, low areas, and material left in equipment can increase usage. Add a project-appropriate allowance and round to the supplier’s delivery increment, but avoid using waste percentage to hide inaccurate measurements. Driveways and roads also require suitable base preparation, drainage, lift thickness, temperature, and compaction; tonnage alone does not determine pavement performance.
