CONVERSION CALCULATOR
Convert common metric, US customary, and imperial units of mass, including kilograms, pounds, ounces, stones, and tons.
How it works
Each selected unit is converted to kilograms, the calculator’s base unit, and then from kilograms to the destination unit.
Conversion formula
Converted value = entered value × source-to-kilogram factor ÷ destination-to-kilogram factor.
Worked example
10 kilograms equals about 22.0462 pounds.
Important limits
- In everyday language, weight and mass are often used interchangeably; technically, weight depends on gravity.
- Metric tons and US short tons are different units.
- Results are rounded for display while the calculation retains additional precision.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram equals approximately 2.20462262185 pounds.
How many ounces are in a pound?
There are exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces in one pound.
Mass, weight, and rounding
Everyday “weight” conversions usually compare units of mass such as grams, kilograms, ounces, and pounds. Scientific force measurements are different: weight as a force depends on local gravity and may be expressed in newtons. Use a force converter when gravity is part of the problem.
Conversions can produce long decimals because customary and metric units do not always align neatly. Keep extra digits during intermediate work, then round to the precision supported by the original measurement. For shipping or product labels, follow the carrier’s or regulator’s specified rounding rule. For recipes, remember that converting ingredient weight is reliable, while converting between weight and volume requires an ingredient-specific density and cannot be done accurately with a universal factor.
