Use these free carpentry and framing calculators to plan sheet goods, lumber, rafters, trim, decorative wall layouts, studs, stairs, and board-foot quantities. Each tool explains its formula, shows a worked example, and lets you adjust waste and pricing inputs to match the project.
Start with field measurements and the actual dimensions printed by the manufacturer. Structural sizing, fastening, loads, spans, moisture exposure, fire requirements, and code compliance are outside simple quantity calculations.

Open calculatorChoose the calculator that matches the unit you purchase. Plywood and panels are bought as whole sheets, trim is commonly priced by piece or linear foot, framing lumber may be counted as boards, and rough hardwood is often priced by board foot. Enter actual product dimensions when weight or coverage depends on physical size. Add waste only after checking the cut layout so the allowance reflects short offcuts, defects, grain direction, pattern matching, and damaged material.
These tools answer planning questions such as how many sheets, boards, pieces, or linear feet may be needed. They do not determine whether a member is structurally adequate. Rafter, stair, wall, deck, and other load-bearing work may require approved plans, span tables, engineered connections, permits, inspections, and a qualified professional. Always follow current local requirements and manufacturer instructions.
For room trim, use the Baseboard Calculator to subtract door openings, add waste, and estimate stock pieces and material cost.
